Additional information: The scene depicts part of the original pier at Swanage in Dorset. Behind it can be seen The Isle of Wight in the distance. 
The crucifix is an addition of my imagination and broadens the possibilities for the interpretation of the scene - Why is the world flooded? Is that all the land that remains? The complex construction of the wooden pile has echoes of the form of the cross and suggests it has been modified and added to over time. 
The painting can be hung either way up as the inverted reflection of the corpus is not identical to the one attached to the wooden pile and it gains a spiritual element as the corpus looks down over the scene.
