Additional information: The scene depicts a Jackdaw perched on top of a lobster pot keeping watch whilst its accomplice, an octopus, sabotages the lobster pot in order to make sure their friend the lobster (not depicted) is ever captured.

Based on a Jackdaw and lobster pot observed at Lynmouth in Devon. The sabotage scenario is merely a flight of fancy. The friendship of the 3 characters has since become a recurring theme in several paintings.
