Fenix Bennu: Original Painting
Fenix Bennu: Original Painting
Title of artwork: Fenix Bennu
Artist: Nick Dale
Materials: Acrylic paint on canvas, on a wooden frame.
Date created: 2021
Approx dimensions: 59.7 x 89.7 cm
Additional information: The painting depicts 2 grey herons but is named after the ancient Egyptian god Bennu, which was depicted as a heron and after which the now extinct Bennu Heron is named. The god Bennu may be the origins of the phoenix legend. 'Fenix' is Anglo-Saxon for phoenix and the scene has been transposed to the East Lyn River at Lynmouth in Devon.
The blood of the dead heron is smoking where it drips on the ground; suggesting that this is indeed a phoenix and it will soon be consumed within the growing fire.
In the foreground there is a Grey Wagtail which is occasionally misidentified as a Yellow Wagtail; another species that has been associated with the god Bennu.
In the background stands an unidentified 4th bird character which I have used as a character in my 'Perplexing Bird' series of paintings. What their role is in this scene is anybody's guess.
For the painting I used photos of a living heron which I took along the East Lyn River. For the 'dead' heron I used a photo of the same heron preening and simply inverted the image to make it appear to be lying down and then added new legs and made some other minor changes.
